Zyanya describes her way of making fashion as more related to art. Her motivation is the continuous exploration of materials and textures and how they can be applied in different ways.

She is the daughter of a Dutch father and a Mexican mother. She was born in Mexico City and is currently living in The Netherlands. During her studies in Antwerp, she discovered that her love for detailing in fabrics and materials, something she grew up with in Mexico, was not understood. Now she emphasizes this love in her work and works a lot with small details such as beads. Her work is an ode to her cultural background.

Zyanya believes that making something with your hands connects you more to what you do, especially in an industry that moves so fast and where people feel less connected to their possessions. In this way, she creates a community and a deeper connection with what she creates. Fashion offers her a base to explore concepts around the body, but through the combination of craft and experimentation, she creates fashion that is sometimes very sculptural but still allows for movement.

“It is mainly about telling stories through textiles and fashion, how to translate thoughts and express them in something that can hopefully be timeless.’
